The LEED Platinum sustainable teaching facilities includes solar hot water heating and photoelectric panels that provide both electricity for lighting systems and heating hot water through heat exchangers for domestic hot water systems. LAB fume hoods are ASHRAE-110 Certified to LABS-21 requirements. Natural daylight provides illumination throughout that results in lower lighting energy density. The building is a near Zero Net Energy (ZNE) facility. Commissioning of this facility began in design and continued through construction, occupancy, and included an energy use assessment during the occupancy period. The commissioning agent helped the design and construction team keep focus and resolve issues early on during installation that could cause problems later during startup and test.
